Bradford-based glass and glazing specialist Solaglas Contracting North has been awarded ‘Best Newcomer’ in the large company category of the Yorkshire Productivity Awards, following the success of its recently introduced NVQ Level 2 in Business Improvement Techniques.
Recognising achievements by local businesses which adopt processes to improve productivity within their organisation, the annual regional awards are now in their sixth year and attract entries from manufacturing companies throughout the north of England.
Solaglas Contracting North was nominated for the award by its NVQ Trainer, who worked with ten employees from the business to help them achieve their NVQ Level 2 in Business Improvement Techniques. The course was run by Yorkshire Productivity; the Ilkley-based training provider specialising in productivity and implementation support for manufacturing companies.
The NVQ specifically addresses team working, workplace organisation, problem solving and workflow. All ten employees spent half a day every week for 13 weeks with their NVQ Trainer, working on various small projects to improve productivity with the business. The team completed a process flow analysis which enabled them to move from a batch-orientated flow to task-based flow operation which resulted in significant time-saving efficiencies.
Lee Barker, Operations Manager commented: “One of the most satisfying aspects of the course was that it gave us the platform to learn as a team the tools and techniques which will enable us to develop our own continuous improvement programmes in the future.”
