Glass and Glazing specialist Solaglas Contracting has completed 1300m² of glazing for the refurbishment and extension of Stratford Station’s eastern egress. Solaglas was appointed to handle the glazing by contractors Volker Fitzpatrick, which chose Solaglas because of its wealth of experience in handling large, complex projects.
As the station was unable to close for any significant length of time, one of the largest sections of the project, the construction and installation of a steel and glass footbridge, had to be built off-site and transported to the station.
In addition to the footbridge, the contract consisted of glazing to the sides and roof of an escalator from the platform to the footbridge, two sides of the new lift shaft and all four sides of the stair tower. The linking passageways between the four elements also benefit from glazed walls and coverings. Schuco curtain wall FW60+ SG system with double glazed low ‘E’ glass units was specified for the project.
The footbridge’s steel structure was delivered to the Volker Fitzpatrick compound where it was glazed by Solaglas. Once completed, the bridge was expertly transported from the compound to the station, where it was carefully craned over the track and manoeuvred into its final position.
All other elements of the project were glazed on the stations platform, which also proved challenging due to the restricted space, dangerous environment and stringent railway regulations. Close working relationships between all contractors were essential due to the complex standing scaffold used to carry out the work.
Volker Fitzpatrick commented: “Solaglas’ project management enabled the contract to run smoothly and be completed straightforwardly which enabled us to complete the unusual and complex project to budget. Due to the implications of closing a main line, it was essential that all work was completed on time and Solaglas were able to provide flexible solutions and technical expertise throughout the project, enabling us to do this.”
