MATTHEW BOULTON COLLEGE AT MILLENNIUM POINT

Matthew Boulton College

Matthew Boulton College is celebrating the completion of four education units by Midlands glazing specialists, Solaglas Structural Contracting.

The £128,000 project was awarded to the Solaglas team by Estilo Interiors as they were able to survey, design and deliver the contract within the 12 week period required, compared to 20 week lead-in time quoted by other contractors. Solaglas had to closely manage all phases of the project ensuring the required hand-over dates were met and the project was completed within budget.

Located in the main lobby of Birmingham’s prestigious Millennium Point, three of the units consisted of seamless all-glass vertical façades constructed from 15mm toughened and heat soaked tested glass, and supported by stainless steel channels. The main entrances to these units feature frameless, slim-line automatic sliding doors.

On the remaining unit, an all-glass feature roof was specified by the Architect to create an ‘all-glass box’. The toughened, laminated glass roof panels were supported with triple glazed glass fins and bespoke stainless steel brackets. Solaglas worked closely with the Architect and other sub-contract trades to design and supply stainless steel brackets that bolted directly to the glass fins to support the sprinkler and lighting systems.

As the Millennium Point remained fully open to the public during construction, all glazing was carried out at night using a ‘mini-crane’ to minimise disruption and eliminate any potential health and safety issues.
